Thank you for explaining it. It makes more sense now, I kinda knew Tetsujin's plot, but didn't click with me reading the article.
Again, I'm really thankful for you translation, since there aren't many interviews with Mangaka's in general.

Thank you so much for translating this. Turns out Urasawa is pretty interesting, his work aside. He must have a keener understanding of other people than he lets on though, to create characters like he does.

Spooky,

Good point.
That is a line I should have 'localized' more (my translation was a little to literal), but "specific chronology" just means that there is a specific context and timeline in recent history (at the time) that Tetsujin 28 takes place in. It's set in a time in history that everyone (at least in Japan) understands, whereas Astro Boy was not, but everyone can relate to on a human level.
Tetsujin 28's setting was both recent history and a situation that was easily put in context, whereas Astro Boy as a distant future fantasy situation that was nowhere near the reality of the times.

I hope that clears that up a little, but I would say Tetsujin 28 and Astro Boy is like "2001: A Space Odyssey" vs. "Star Wars."
One was relatively near future and cool at the time but didn't last, and the other was distant future but more enduring because of the timeless human element and lives on today.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate the work you put into to get to know Urasawa better.

One line I didn't get: If it were “Tetsujin #28” [Gigantor], the ultimate weapon of the Japanese army being finished in the days after the war, we have a specific chronology (what does he mean with specific chronology?).
