Okay, so 20th Century Boys is out.
If you read it you know the title of this post is the opening line of the story (or it's something like that. I haven't read the English version yet, but I do intend to get to Kinokuniya to find it and write about it soon).
Maybe I'm hoping for too much, but other than a lot of nice reviews I don't see the big manga world-altering impact I was anticipating.
Maybe my finger is nervously twitching over the panic button too soon, but so far I've found one sales chart from Japanese comic sales stats site extraordinaire, Rocket Bomber, that showed me this disappointment on the "Consolidated Online Sales Rankings for the week ending 22 February 2009":
82. ↑143 (225) : 20th Century Boys 1 – Viz Signature, Feb 2009 [315.6] ::
20th Century Boys is ranked 82!? WTF!?
I was kind of hoping 20th Century Boys would burst onto the scene like Otcho through a stained glass window (you'll see!) and break every record there is for Japanese comic books not by Masashi Kishimoto.
I'm still hoping...
Pluto did even worse:
105. ↑182 (287) : Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka 1 – Viz Signature, Feb 2009 [274.1] ::
Even thinning it out to new releases and preorders for that same week didn’t make it look much better.
I hope they are just starting slow, or that other numbers look better (I await ICv2's February sales stats!) but I'm worried.
If an older audience really does exsist for Japanese comics, where that hell are you!?
If you're out there;
Stop reading this and buy these comics NOW!!!

While I'm waiting for something to happen, and thanks to a link from the Manga Blog informing me of its existence, I tracked down a new comic by Hayao Miyazaki about the designer of the Mitsubishi Zero Fighter.
More on that next time.
